Back in 2008, during my third year at Lipscomb, we played in the Athens, GA NCAA Regionals where we beat UGA on Friday but were put out of the tournament by Georgia on Sunday. UGA would finish the season as College World Series Runners Up. Rex Brothers, our star left-handed pitcher, pitched in the 93-96 mph range, touching 98 mph and would eventually be drafted #32 overall in the MLB Draft. Then there was Matt, another talented guy who, during off-season training, could throw even harder than Rex.
It was nothing for Matt to hit 100 mph inside our off-season weighted ball program that consisted of run and guns. But, when the season rolled around, and Matt stepped on the mound, his velocity dropped to the low 90’s. He hadn’t lost any arm strength, so why did his velocity gains not transfer?
This would take years for me to figure out. The reason was Matt couldn’t “Ride the Slide.” "
Reflecting on Matt's pitching journey, it became clear that the key issue was his inability to 'Ride the Slide'. Like many pitchers who set personal records with 'run and gun', Matt was predominantly using his quads.
Our training back then focused on hip extension or pushing off, rewarding this approach. But here’s the kicker: this method didn't translate well to the mound because we spent no time with the hips, or pelvis. Nor, did we invest much training time on the mound. I believed the mound was harmful and that flatground was the safest and most effective. Boy, was I wrong? I feel like writing an apology letter most days to the players I’ve coached.
I was in the dark back then, thinking arm strength was the key and that weighted balls would automatically bump up velocity, even if just slightly. Over time, I've seen a pattern. Pitchers who rely heavily on crow-hopping and running start to gather momentum and usually become quad-dominant. These are the guys who often hit a velocity plateau. You never hear complaints about low velocity or poor mechanics from pitchers who've mastered 'Riding the Slide'.
So, what's the big takeaway for pitchers? It's this:
Since the arm is attached to the core, it has no choice but to keep up.
